We’re always surprised when we mention our “Lily Trees” and no one has ever heard of such a thing. We got our bulbs from Breck’s 4–5 years ago and they were advertised as growing to 3-4 feet tall the first couple years, 5-6 feet tall the next couple years and even taller after that. I also remember the catalog had a photo with a bike leaning against one of them to show how strong they are. (I couldn’t find any of that on the site now.)
When I just did a Google search to find out more about them there weren’t that many results — so I guess they’re not that well know. I found out that most serious flower growers complain that the bulb companies made up the name “Lily Trees” and that they’re really just a tall variety of lilies and that rarely grows taller than five feet. We agree that they aren’t actually trees (duh!), but we disagree about their maximum height. Skeptics, meet our Lily Trees:
It’s hard to tell from the picture, but this year they got at least 6-7 feet tall. They would have gotten even taller but our snowball bush and lilacs totally took over this area this year and the Lily Trees had to fight their way through those just to get some sun. We finally trimmed back the snowball bush and lilacs — and there the Lily Trees were! The blooms are amazing, as you can see. These pictures were taken when they were almost finished blooming, so they were even more impressive about a week before. Here’s one more close-up photo just because the blooms are awesome:
Beautiful!
